Appen work from home reviews: Is Appen legitimate?

What is Appen?

Appen is a company that specializes in technology services such as AI and machine learning products.  They are based out of Australia.

Appen offers many different types of jobs for those wanting to work at home.  They offer positions for those in 130 countries around the world.  They are a great opportunity for those looking for remote work.

Is Appen a legitimate company?

Yes, I have worked for Appen in the past and have been paid for my work.  Forbes has listed Appen at the top of their list of Top 100 Companies For Remote Jobs for 2020.*  Appen is a publicly traded company on the Australian Securities Exchange, as well.

What jobs does Appen offer to work from home?

Some of the different positions available are:

Search Engine Evaluator (working for popular and well-known search engines)
Ads Evaluator
Maps Analyst
Transcription
Social Media Evaluator
Translator
Voice Data Collection
Etc.

Each position has a different set of guidelines and time commitment.  Some jobs may be a one time position, others may be weekly part time jobs with a wide variety of work hours.

The social media evaluator position allow you to work 1-4 hours a day depending on which project you are on.

The search engine evaluation position requries you to work 10-20 hours per work analyzing search results online.

Some of the positions require an exam (they are not difficult) in order to be hired.  The company will provide you with a set of guidelines that you should review and study before taking the exam.

There are a large number of available projects that you can apply for including one-time projects, such as simple surveys.

How much do you make at Appen?

Appen’s pay ranges from $9-15/hr depending on your location and your project.

The highest paying jobs are those that are offered on a hourly basis, such as the search engine evaluator, ads evaluator, maps analyst, or social media roles.

Appen Work from Home Reviews: Pros

The best part of working from home for Appen is the flexibility of the job.  You are given a minimum and maximum number of hours you can work each week.

You will have a deadline for each week (typically on Saturday or Sunday) that you must complete your hours.

Then you can work on your own time.  You can log in whenever is convenient for you.  If you are a parent, you can work around your children’s schedule.  Some of my time logs from working for this company in the past look like this,

Monday: 8:30-8:44 A.M., 9:05-9:07 A.M., 9:48-10:04 A.M., 11:45-12:00 P.M., 2:00-2:34 P.M., 8:55-10:00 P.M. So on that particular day I would have worked a total of 2 hours and 26 mins.

As a stay-at-home parent, I would take many breaks throughout the day based on my kids’ schedules.  But you could also choose to just wake up early or stay up late at night to work a few hours straight instead of working while your kids are awake.

You make your own hours!

The flexible hours makes it one of the best home jobs (part-time).I love how convenient this job was to earn money from home!  And you will, too!  Even if you aren’t a parent.

This job is great for remote workers who want to travel, students, stay-at-home parents, and those who just want to supplement their income from with online jobs.

Appen work from home reviews: Negative reviews

Unfortunately, there are some cons to working for Appen as well.  Some projects may not have consistent work, and there may be times when the work is slow, which means you won’t make as much money.  (Particularly during the holidays).

Some locations may offer low pay in comparison to other locales.

As the majority of these positions are part-time work, you will not be making a full-time income.  This means you can only earn a part-time income.

As a remote worker, you will have limited to zero human interaction.  If you thrive on being around others, then this home opportunity may not be the job you are looking for.

How do I apply to Appen? Step-by-step application process

When you go to the Appen website, you will start by filling out the application.

When you get to this stage in your application, make sure to click on the first contract type: I intend to contract directly with Appen as an independent contractor.

This means that you will be an independent contractor so you will not get a W4 from the company for tax purposes.  You will be responsible for paying your own taxes for the position.  (Make sure to deduct your home office and internet so you do not lose any money during tax season!)

After applying with Appen, you may be required to take a qualification exam (dependent on the project that you apply for).  Based upon your results on this exam, your profile will be matched with different remote job opportunities available with Appen.

When you log into the site using the agent login in the top right corner, you can find and apply to any jobs that you meet the qualifications for.

When you log in, you will want to click on “All Projects” and hit “Go” to find the available job opportunities.

Then you will get a list of different projects that are available with the company, along with their hourly rate and average task volume.

Once you find a project that you would like to apply for, you would click on the green button that says “Qualify.”

The hourly rate for each project depends on the location you live in.  Appen projects range from $8-15/hour depending on the project and locale.

It can take a few days or weeks to hear back from them about the projects you apply for.  In the meanwhile, you can check out other available opportunities that sound interesting to you that you can also apply for.

They may send you new projects that you can qualify for as well.

Once they review your application and offer you a position, you will receive an e-mail from the company using the e-mail you registered with.
