What is the difference between the rich and the poor?

There’s more of a difference between the rich and the poor than just the amount of money in their bank accounts. The rich and the poor each have a different mindset that leads to whether or not they are successful.

It is true – millionaires think differently than the average working Joe.  They have different beliefs and know that their life was meant for more than working a normal 9-5 job and retiring at 65.

Having a poor mindset can actually keep you from becoming wealthy.

“Before you can become a millionaire, you must learn to think like one. You must learn how to motivate yourself to counter fear with courage.” – Thomas J. Stanley

Rich vs. Poor mindset: 9 Habits of the Rich Mindset vs. Habits of the Poor Mindset

poor vs rich mindset

Rich people believe they can accomplish their goals.

Rich people don’t let fear hold them back.  They set their mind to something and push forward, no matter how big the obstacles are that are facing them.

Poor people believe that those same obstacles will prevent them from achieving their dreams.  They don’t think that they will be able to succeed – so they either don’t try at all, or they give up too quickly.

“What’s keeping you from being rich? In most cases it’s simply a lack of belief. In order to become rich, you must believe you can do it, and you must take the actions necessary to achieve your goal.” – Suze Orman

Rich people continue to learn.

Poor people believe that having a 9-5 job is enough, and spend their free time socializing with friends, watching TV, and going out for drinks. They become comfortable in their career, and settle for the job with two vacation weeks a year and a retirement age of 65.

When they are not at work, they are not working.  They are clocked out.

However rich people understand that in order to grow, you must always be learning.  They spend their down time continuing their education.

Rich people are always researching and studying because they know that it’s important to achieving their goals and pursuing that next level.

You can find successful people constantly improving their personal development and learning.  They will spent their extra time reading books, taking online courses, listening to podcasts, watching YouTube videos, etc. that teach them more about their field of interest.

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.”  – Jim Rohn

Rich people don’t waste time.

The rich mindset understands that time is valuable and they do not waste it.  You will not find them sleeping in late, and staying up late binge-watching TV shows on Netflix.

Rich people focus on their long term goals and taking steps to get there as fast as they can.  This means that they make sacrifices in order to achieve these goals, giving up leisurely time and pleasures in order to continue to work.

They are more likely to wake up early in the morning and start working hard, instead of staying up late and then sleeping in.

“The only difference between a rich person and poor person is how they use their time.” – Robert Kiyosaki

Rich people associate with other like-minded individuals.

Yes, rich people tend to associate with other wealthy individuals.  Does this mean they won’t associate with people who are not wealthy?

No.  They might, but they know that hanging out with those that have the same mindset as them will encourage and motivate them to meet their goals and continue to work hard.

Rich people take risks.

Another different in the rich mentality vs. poor mentality is that the rich mindset understands that in order to succeed, one must take risks.  Poor mindsets do not take big risks because they only see the potential for disaster instead of the reward.

A rich person embraces competition, while a poor person might fear this obstacle.

Those with a rich mindset are more likely to work outside of their comfort zones by taking risks on investments, projects, and businesses, while those with a poor mindset are more likely to be scared to fail.

“The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.” – Mark Zuckerberg

Rich people make a long-term plan.

Another difference in the rich mindset vs. poor mindset is that the rich mindset believes that their hard work will pay off – in the long term.  They work hard consistently even if they do not gain anything in the short-term for their efforts.

Part of the rich mentality is understanding that they might not see a reward for their hard work for a year or even longer.  But they put in the work anyway.

The poor mentality lacks the ambition to continue to work hard if they aren’t getting a return on their effort.  They only see their money in matters of paycheck to paycheck.

They find a 9-5 job, and look to earn raises, and settle for that pay rate as their end game.

Rich people use their money to make money.

A rich person will invest their money, while a person with a poor mindset will either spend their money or save it.

Someone with a wealthy mindset will understand that investing their money will create more money vs. just saving it in a bank account.

Those with a rich mindset are more likely to invest their money in stocks, real estate, and other money-building projects.  They use their wealth to create more wealth.

Rich people get paid from results.

Another difference between the rich vs. poor mindset is that those that are wealthy tend to get paid from their hard work.  They are more likely to be entrepreneurs or investors, and get paid based on their projects, businesses, and investments.

Those with a poor mindset tend to be paid based on their time.  They tend to work jobs that pay them hourly or a salary.

It is much harder to grow their wealth in this manner unless they get a raise or take on a side project to increase their income.

Rich people build multiple streams of income

Rich people know that having one income isn’t going to maintain their wealth.  For example, let’s take a look at popular families on reality TV.

They not only have a famous and popular reality show, but each sibling has their own individual businesses on top of their salary from the show.  They have multiple streams of income that are growing their wealth.

They do not put all of their eggs in one basket.  They continue to research, create, and implement more projects that will increase their net worth.

They have multiple streams of income because they know that is the best way to maintain their wealth and grow it.

“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.” – Warren Buffett
